Oscar Adler

(American, b 1946)

Known as Giovanni, after 1990 the artist dropped DeCunto from his name and signed his work Giovanni. He studied at Vesper George Art School (1969-1970); the Art Institute, Boston (1970-1971); Boston University, School of Fine & Applied Arts (BFA, 1987 on scholarship); BU College of Liberal Arts International Fellowship for Renaissance Study, Italy (1987-1988) and to Padua, Italy (1988-1989). Soon, his edge, provocative, colorful paintings with thick impasto were recognized at modern and unique, and not only was he given one-man exhibitions, he began to perform in public with live painting appearances and was featured on The Good Day Show, Boston Cablevision; the Paradise Club; Hub Club; Performance Art with Livingston Taylor, Boston; Art New England, WBZ News, Boston; Brookline Art Society; Art New England; Pedrocchi, Padua, Italy; Channel 3 News, Padua, Italy; Suffolk University, Arts & Humanities lecture and more.

In 1990, Pat Pierce suggested to Giovanni that he create a Legend Series, and out of that idea came major canvases of James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, Michael Jackson, Marlon Brando and Martin Luther King. In recent years, the artist has painted over 25 more legendary icons like Tom & Katie Cruise (in their collection) and Shaquille O’Neal.

Giovanni has been given solo exhibitions at Pierce Galleries, Inc. (Jan. 1990, 1991); Bridgewater State University, Wallace L. Anderson Gallery (Dec. 1991); Francesca Anderson Gallery, Boston; Metro, NYC; Houston Astrodome, Dallas, TX; Kitinger’s Design Center, Boston; Daniel Rene; Renjean Galleries, Boston; Goguen Gallery, Kennebunkport, ME; Boston Symphony Hall; Dallas Design Center; Gallery of the Southewest, Taos, NM, Ergane Gallery, SoHO (February 1992) and has recently been featured in SC, FL and Boston galleries. His work is represented in the White House; George Bush Presidential Library collection; City Hall, Padua, Italy; National Portrait Gallery, Washington, DC; The Fogg Art Museum, Cambridge, MA; Muskegon Museum of Art, MI; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; M.I.T.
