Zhen-Huan Lu’s super-realistic painting The Barn is an egg tempera, a fast-drying painting medium consisting of colored pigment mixed with a water-soluble binder egg yolk. Egg tempera was popular through the Renaissance, but when oil pigments were discovered artists rushed to paint with them because they were easier to manipulate. Andrew Wyeth was proficient at painting in egg tempera, but there are only a handful of painter’s competent enough to paint with the medium today.
