Hawley Nell

(American, 1880-1925)

Not much is known about Hawley B. Nell, although the artist is known for having painted charming, impressionistic landscapes and marines in and around the Camden, Rockport, Portland and Kennebunkport, Maine areas. The competent painter was largely self-taught, but was highly influenced by the work of John Joseph Enneking, Willard Metcalf and George Inness. He lived and died in Maine.

A lone figure looks into a river during the early winter and Nell captures a tranquil, intimate moment in time, while at the same time he shows the atmosphere surrounding the figure in a realistic, competent manner.
