A wonderful and rare early Nantucket sailor boy whirligig. He wears a tin-brimmed hat with fabric ribbon. Though showing considerable weathering, much of the original paint remains. The paddles are long gone. Oversized, measuring 18 1/2 in. tall, 18 1/2 in. wide, with body thickness of about 3/4 in. Late 19th to early 20th C. A similar example attributed to William H. Chase is in the collection of the Nantucket Historical Association and is illustrated in The Decorative Arts and Crafts of Nantucket by Charles and Mary Carpenter.
