George McConnell

George McConnell was a marine and landscape painter born in 1852 in Steubenville, Ohio. He died in Portland, Maine in 1929. After he studied in New York City, Philadelphia and Paris, McConnell returned to Maine and opened a studio in 1883 in Portland, where he became a successful and popular landscape and marine artist. He was somewhat a recluse and was a member of the Society of Independent Artists. His works that are larger than 12 x 16 inches are rare and sought after. He was a realist who painted directly from nature.
